UN Chief Warns of Slow Progress on Sustainable Development Goals
During his address at the unveiling of the Sustainable Development Goals 2025 report, Guterres highlighted that a decade has elapsed since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
He emphasized that millions of individuals have gained access to electricity, clean cooking options, and internet connectivity since 2015.
Additionally, social protection programs now cover more than half of the global population, marking a significant rise compared to a decade ago.
The UN chief also reported that educational access is steadily improving, with increasing numbers of girls enrolling in schools, and a decline in child marriage rates.
Furthermore, he noted that renewable energy capacity has grown, especially driven by developing nations, and pointed out that "Women's representation is rising across governments, businesses and societies."
Nevertheless, Guterres underscored that the progress made is insufficient and below expectations.
“We are in a global development emergency,” he declared, pointing out that over 800 million people still endure extreme poverty, the impacts of climate change are escalating, and persistent debt repayments are draining the financial resources countries need to invest in their citizens.
