Russia, Malaysia plan on enhancing nuclear collaboration

(MENAFN) Russia and Malaysia have agreed to enhance their cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, according to Russia’s state atomic energy corporation Rosatom. The announcement followed high-level discussions in Moscow on Friday between Rosatom CEO Aleksey Likhachev and Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof.

The talks centered on the potential use of Rosatom’s nuclear power plant (NPP) technologies, as outlined in a Rosatom press release. Fadillah, who also serves as Malaysia’s Minister for Energy Transition and Water Transformation, emphasized Malaysia’s commitment to building a long-term strategic partnership with Russia based on trust and shared goals.

Likhachev revealed that Malaysia has shown particular interest in Russia’s floating nuclear power plants, a topic that gained momentum following Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to Russia last month.

“We presented Malaysia with a full range of options: large and small power stations, both land-based and floating. For a variety of reasons, Malaysia is leaning toward floating nuclear power plants with a capacity of 100 MW each,” Likhachev told the Izvestia news outlet. “These plants can be built in Russia and delivered fully operational.”

As part of their visit, the Malaysian delegation toured the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant in St. Petersburg to observe Russia’s latest advancements in nuclear technology and safety standards. They also visited Moscow’s ATOM Pavilion at VDNKh, which showcases over 1,700 interactive exhibits on nuclear science.

Fadillah described the experience as “eye-opening,” praising the pavilion for highlighting both innovation and historical context. “This visit confirmed my belief that technology, when guided by knowledge, values, and responsibility, can drive a sustainable, innovative, and competitive future,” he shared on social media.

During his five-day trip, Fadillah also met with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksey Overchuk to further discuss bilateral cooperation.
