Syria Urges Suwayda Citizens to Comply with Curfew
(MENAFN) The Syrian government has urged the people of Suwayda to respect the curfew that has been in effect since Tuesday, after clashes flared up again between the military and what officials described as "outlaw groups."
These renewed confrontations have disrupted a ceasefire that had been arranged in the city earlier this week.
According to a statement from the Defense Ministry, cited by a news agency, “after a ceasefire agreement was concluded with the notables and elders of Suwayda city on Monday, lawless groups resumed attacking the army and internal security forces within the city.”
The ministry reiterated that “we have previously confirmed the army's right to respond to sources of fire.”
The ministry also emphasized that “the army continues to respond to sources of fire inside Suwayda city, while observing the rules of engagement to protect civilians, prevent harm, and ensure a safe return for those who left the city to their homes.”
It further advised that “residents inside the city stay at home and report any remaining lawless groups.”
Earlier, on Monday, Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra announced a complete ceasefire deal in Suwayda.
Following this, army and security units entered the city center to reassert control. In light of the ongoing tensions, Syrian officials have put in place a curfew “until further notice to protect lives.”
