Ferocious Wildfires Sweep Through Libyan Oasis
The inferno, which ignited earlier that day, remains uncontained and has sparked widespread panic among locals, as reported by a state news agency.
“The fires started in the farms due to high temperatures before quickly spreading to nearby residential areas, amid a clear absence of specialized firefighting teams,” the agency stated.
Saleh Sawsam, who leads the local youth council in Alawenat, called on both security and military forces to take immediate action, warning that the fires pose a looming crisis.
"We are currently relying on sewage trucks and their pumps in a primitive attempt to extinguish the fires, after all previous calls to provide specialized equipment failed," Sawsam said.
He emphasized that Alawenat is facing an increasingly dire situation.
“The lack of capabilities increases the suffering of the residents, and every passing minute leads to more property losses."
Intense summer heat often triggers fires in Libya, particularly in the country’s southern and western regions.
The latest incident prior to this one occurred on March 9, when blazes erupted in the palm forests of Rebiana, located in southeastern Libya.
