Media reports Indians lost over USD800 million to online scams in 2025
The report indicates that more than half of these financial losses trace back to scammers operating from Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. Data from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center reveals that these scams often originate from tightly secured locations believed to be under Chinese control.
The scam operations allegedly force trafficked individuals, including Indians, to defraud unsuspecting victims, the Indian Express reported.
A government source disclosed that India’s Foreign Ministry recently held talks with Cambodian officials in New Delhi to develop a strategy against the scams. Cambodia reportedly asked India to provide precise coordinates of these scam centers to enable law enforcement action.
In March, India repatriated 549 citizens who had been rescued from cybercrime hubs along the Myanmar-Thailand border. Many Indians, along with nationals from other Asian and African countries, had been lured with fake IT job offers, only to be trafficked into these illegal centers in unregulated regions of Myanmar.
According to an Indian official, intelligence reports and testimonies from survivors have identified at least 45 scam compounds in Cambodia, five in Laos, and one in Myanmar.
