Kremlin calls on Trump to push Kiev for negotiated deal
Earlier this week, Trump revealed a plan for NATO countries supporting Ukraine to purchase American-made weapons for the ongoing conflict with Russia. He also threatened to impose sanctions on Russia and its trading partners if the fighting does not end within 50 days. No similar deadline was set for Ukraine.
“There were a lot of remarks about [Trump’s] disappointment [with Russian President Vladimir Putin], but we want to hope that in parallel to that, pressure is being applied to the Ukrainian side,” Peskov told reporters. “It appears that the Ukrainian side takes all statements of support as signals to continue war, not as signals for peace.”
Publicly, Trump has alternated blame between Moscow and Kiev for the stalemate in peace efforts, though his recent remarks have mainly criticized Russia.
In May, Ukraine agreed to resume direct talks with Russia following encouragement from the Trump administration, but negotiations stalled after an early June meeting. Kiev later declared the process “exhausted,” saying it had participated only to avoid appearing dismissive of Trump’s diplomatic efforts.
Moscow maintains its commitment to achieving its key goals in Ukraine but favors diplomacy if possible.
Trump’s warnings have been welcomed by hardliners in the US and Europe. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina issued a veiled military threat, writing on X that “if Putin and others are wondering what happens on day 51, I would suggest they call the Ayatollah.” Graham referred to Iran’s supreme leader after US and Israeli airstrikes targeted Iranian nuclear sites last month—attacks claimed necessary to dismantle Tehran’s nuclear capabilities, which Iran denies seeking to weaponize.
