Belarus shares update on placement of Russian Oreshnik missiles
“We reached this agreement with Putin in Volgograd. The first Oreshnik missile systems will be placed in Belarus. You’ve already seen how effective these weapons are. They will be deployed here by the end of this year,” Lukashenko said.
The Oreshnik missiles are expected to be mounted on Belarusian-made chassis, with Lukashenko noting earlier this year that several of these vehicles had already been produced and tested successfully.
Russia first used the missile in combat last November to strike a military facility in Ukraine. At the time, Moscow framed the attack as a response to the West permitting Ukraine to use donated long-range weapons for strikes deep inside Russian territory.
The Oreshnik missile, a medium-range hypersonic weapon, is reportedly capable of carrying nuclear warheads, though President Putin previously emphasized that its conventional payload alone could deliver destruction comparable to that of a low-yield nuclear bomb. The system features multiple independently guided warheads that remain maneuverable even at hypersonic speeds.
