Russian Demographer Suggests Shorter Schooling
Sergey Rybalchenko, who leads the Demography Commission of the Public Chamber, emphasized the need for decisive measures to prevent a further decrease in Russia’s population figures.
He believes that merely minor policy tweaks are not enough to combat the demographic challenges the country is currently facing.
Over the last few decades, Russia has been experiencing negative natural population growth.
The total number of inhabitants fell from 149 million in 1993 to 146 million by 2025, despite receiving numerous immigrants and integrating Crimea in 2014 along with four additional former Ukrainian territories in 2022.
Projections made by the national statistics service, Rosstat, indicate that under the baseline forecast, Russia’s population could decline further to 138.8 million by the year 2046.
“A shorter education period would enable young people to reach adulthood and plan to have children for two years earlier,” Rybalchenko told the news agency, outlining the rationale behind his proposal.
