Deadly Clashes Over Land Leave Six Dead in Colombia’s Cauca Region

(MENAFN) At least six people have been killed and around 100 others injured after violent confrontations erupted between two indigenous communities over ancestral land claims in southwestern Colombia, according to reports.

The clashes between the Misak and Nasa groups broke out in the rural municipality of Silvia in the Cauca department, an area long affected by illicit crop cultivation and territorial disputes.

Colombia’s Ombudsman’s Office said that several individuals were also detained by rival community members during the escalation of violence.

Initial figures released by Cauca Governor Octavio Guzman varied throughout the week, ranging from three to five deaths, before authorities later confirmed a total of six fatalities and nearly 100 injuries as the situation intensified.

The confrontation reportedly escalated from hand-to-hand fighting with sticks and improvised shields to the use of firearms, with videos shared on social media showing injured individuals lying along rural roads amid ongoing clashes.
