China Rebukes U.S. 50 Percent Tariff on Brazilian Imports
At a press briefing in Beijing on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized, "Sovereign equality and non-interference in other countries' internal affairs are important principles of the UN charter and basic norms in international relations."
She further argued, "Tariffs should not be used as a tool for coercion, bullying, or interference in other countries' internal affairs."
The remarks came in response to US President Donald Trump’s Wednesday announcement of the sweeping tariffs, which he justified by criticizing Brazil's handling of former President Jair Bolsonaro and alleged censorship efforts targeting American platforms.
Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva swiftly denounced the tariffs, asserting, "Brazil is a sovereign nation with independent institutions and will not accept any form of tutelage."
The dispute highlights ongoing tensions between the US and Brazil over economic and political differences, with both nations standing firm on their respective positions.
