Russia Announces New Advances in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia
According to a statement from the Russian Defense Ministry, troops captured the village of Mayak, situated roughly 18 kilometers (11.1 miles) northeast of Pokrovsk—a frontline city where battles between Ukrainian and Russian forces have escalated in recent weeks.
Moscow has continued to report territorial progress, especially in the contested Donetsk region, which has seen intensified fighting centered around Pokrovsk. The city plays a vital role in Ukraine’s defense strategy, acting as a major logistical base for military operations in the east.
The ministry also claimed that Russian units had secured control over Malynivka, a village in the Zaporizhzhia region about 33 kilometers (20 miles) southwest of the strategically significant town of Velyka Novosilka.
Russia had previously stated on January 27 that it had captured Velyka Novosilka, a town located near the intersection of the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.
Ukrainian officials have not yet responded to the latest statements, and due to the continuing conflict, independent confirmation of Russia’s reported gains remains challenging.
