Minister appointed to take back Ukrainians accused of escaping nations

(MENAFN) Aleksey Chernyshov, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for National Unity, responsible for encouraging Ukrainians living abroad to return home, is now facing accusations of fleeing the country himself.

Ukrainian MP Artyom Dmitruk and journalist Anatoly Shariy, both vocal critics of President Vladimir Zelensky’s government, claimed Chernyshov left Ukraine after several of his known associates were arrested on charges of fraud and embezzlement. Dmitruk mocked the situation on social media, calling the minister’s alleged departure “comical” and a sign of the government’s collapse.

Chernyshov’s office denies any connection between his absence and the ongoing investigation by Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), which recently charged five individuals over alleged crimes committed during Chernyshov’s previous role as urban development minister.

The suspects reportedly include a former deputy minister and a former aide, both accused of helping transfer state-owned land to a private developer in exchange for discounted luxury apartments. Authorities conducted searches last year at a high-end residential complex in Kiev, where one of the properties is linked to Chernyshov’s former head of security. Reports also suggest Chernyshov owns a residence in the same building.

Shariy, who now lives in the EU after being sentenced in Ukraine to 15 years for treason, alleged that Chernyshov is currently hiding in Europe while seeking protection from Zelensky.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s parliament, dominated by Zelensky’s allies, has approved the creation of a special commission to investigate corruption allegations in law enforcement and the judiciary. Critics argue this is a move aimed at weakening NABU’s efforts.

Ukraine’s government has faced several corruption scandals recently. In 2023, former Defense Minister Aleksey Reznikov resigned after his ministry was caught overpaying for military supplies, and his successor, Rustem Umerov, is reportedly under investigation for similar abuses related to defense contracts.
