Merz Condemns Israel’s Plan for Palestinian Relocation
During an interview with a public broadcaster, Merz stated, "The way things are currently happening in the Gaza Strip is unacceptable," reaffirming his call for greater humanitarian assistance and a peaceful, negotiated resolution to the ongoing crisis.
Merz, leader of the conservative bloc, openly criticized the actions of the Israeli administration over recent weeks.
"I have not liked what the Israeli government has been doing in the Gaza Strip for many weeks now. I have also expressed that," he said, noting that he had conveyed his dissatisfaction directly to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu through their phone conversations.
Expressing his hopes for international cooperation, Merz added, "I hope that we Europeans, together with the Americans, can bring about a solution that ultimately leads to a two-state solution.
The Palestinians have a right to have a place where they can live," emphasizing that the situation in Gaza remains deeply troubling and intolerable.
The controversy escalated last week when Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz declared that he had directed the military to devise a strategy for relocating all Palestinian residents into a so-called “humanitarian city” erected on the ruins of Rafah.
As per Katz's announcement, the entire civilian population would be confined within this newly constructed area, from which they would be allowed to depart Gaza for other nations.
