Kremlin unveils how Putin will participate in BRICS summit

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin will participate in the upcoming BRICS summit in Brazil via video link, according to his foreign policy adviser, Yury Ushakov. The summit, which marks the 17th annual meeting of the group, will be held in Rio de Janeiro this July.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will represent Russia in person at the event. Ushakov explained that Putin’s decision not to travel stems from unresolved issues surrounding the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant against him. “The president will join via video link due to complications arising from ICC requirements,” Ushakov stated. He noted that Brazil’s government could not guarantee conditions that would allow Putin to attend in person.

In 2023, the ICC issued warrants for Putin and Russian children’s rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova, accusing them of unlawfully relocating children from Ukraine during the conflict. Moscow has dismissed these accusations as politically driven, arguing that the children were evacuated for their safety from combat zones.

Lvova-Belova recently announced that Russia is working on compiling a list of children in Ukraine who should be reunited with their families in Russia. This list will be presented to Kiev during future negotiations. Additionally, she mentioned that five of the 339 children Ukraine has requested to be returned are currently being prepared for transfer.

Russia does not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction, as it is not a signatory to the court’s founding treaty. Other non-signatory nations include the US, China, and Israel. The ICC has also faced criticism from the US, with former President Donald Trump imposing sanctions on the court after it issued warrants against Israeli officials over alleged war crimes in Gaza.
