Moscow cautions of deepfake ‘informational barbarism’

(MENAFN) The widespread use of deepfake technology is pushing the world toward a state of “informational barbarism,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has warned. Speaking at the 19th General Assembly of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA), hosted by Russia last week, Zakharova urged media organizations to boost their investment in fact-checking and video verification systems.

Zakharova highlighted deepfakes as a growing global threat, explaining that malicious actors increasingly exploit generative technologies to spread falsehoods and manipulate public perception. “A few years ago, deepfakes were simply a novelty that confused people,” she noted. “But today, the quality and volume of such content raises serious concerns about whether humanity is prepared to counter these threats.” She admitted there is no clear solution yet.

The Russian Foreign Ministry regularly works to debunk fake materials targeting its staff, including fabricated content involving Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Zakharova herself. However, as the volume of such material grows, so does the effort required to refute it. She also pointed out that the issue extends beyond politics, citing the increased use of deepfakes by scammers.

Zakharova called for a “systemic and comprehensive” international response to this technological challenge. She stressed the importance of news agencies maintaining specialized departments trained to detect and counter deepfakes, noting that media organizations are on the front lines of this fight because of their role in processing vast amounts of information.

Since launching an anti-fake news campaign in 2017, the Russian Foreign Ministry claims to have issued over 5,000 rebuttals and 350 detailed reports addressing what it sees as informational attacks against Russia.
