Kremlin voices remarks on potential US attack on Iran
Hostilities intensified after Israel launched major airstrikes on Iran last week, claiming Tehran was nearing the production of a nuclear weapon. Iran rejected the allegations and responded with waves of drone and missile attacks. The exchanges between the two nations have continued.
US President Donald Trump has recently threatened Iran, demanding it abandon its nuclear ambitions and surrender unconditionally. Although The Wall Street Journal reported that a US attack plan has already been secretly approved, Trump dismissed the report, saying it was inaccurate. The White House stated that Trump will make a final decision within two weeks.
“Moscow believes such actions would be a mistake,” Peskov said. “Any US strike would escalate the conflict significantly and further destabilize the region.” He warned that such moves could ignite a broader regional war, adding that Russia is prepared to help mediate the crisis.
When asked about possible US or Israeli efforts to force regime change in Iran, Peskov called such ideas unacceptable. “Even discussing this is wrong, let alone acting on it,” he stressed.
Peskov noted that President Vladimir Putin has a clear understanding of the situation and maintains communication with both Tehran and Tel Aviv. Putin is one of the few world leaders to speak directly with the governments of both countries since the conflict erupted. However, Peskov admitted that the prospects for negotiations remain slim as both sides appear determined to continue fighting.
Putin revealed during a recent Q&A session that Russia has proposed compromise solutions to the US, Israel, and Iran. These proposals include security guarantees for both nations—ensuring Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear technology and Israel’s right to security.
