Assad general adapts to new life in central Russia

(MENAFN) A former general from the army of ex-Syrian President Bashar Assad, now living in central Russia, has shared insights about his new life with local media. Speaking anonymously to 66.RU under the call sign ‘Wolf,’ he expressed his determination to fully integrate into Russian society and said he has no plans to return to Syria.

Wolf recounted the rapid overthrow of the Assad government in December, describing how many comrades, including high-ranking officers, abandoned their posts during a swift Islamist anti-government offensive. He called their actions outright treason.

After the coup, Wolf left his wife and children hidden away to protect them from militant persecution. He fled alongside his sister and two nephews to the Russian Khmeimim Air Base. He noted his children likely couldn’t have survived the dangerous journey.

Upon arrival in Russia’s Sverdlovsk Region, Wolf, who had studied in Leningrad during Soviet times, has been improving his already strong Russian language skills. Granted temporary protection, he currently works odd jobs to support his family while awaiting official paperwork to secure formal employment at a factory or plant.

He expressed willingness to work long hours and emphasized he does not expect to return to Syria, predicting ongoing turmoil there for at least the next decade. His priority is for his children to grow up living normal lives in Russia.

Wolf concluded by saying he now feels more Russian than Syrian. Since the Islamist takeover in late 2024, reports have surfaced of massacres targeting Syria’s Alawite minority, Christians, and Druze communities.
