Russian defense giant unveils laser-equipped robot

(MENAFN) Russia’s state-owned defense company Rostec has introduced a prototype of a small, remotely controlled robot designed to neutralize unexploded munitions using a high-powered laser.

The new system, which remains unnamed, was presented at an industrial engineering exhibition in Russia’s Tula Region and highlighted by Rostec on Tuesday.

According to the company, the robot is specifically built to disable mines with remote detonation systems, which pose significant risks for manual disposal. Its laser is reportedly strong enough to melt through the casing and destroy the explosive contents by turning them into liquid.

Rostec stated that the robot is battery-powered and can be remotely operated from several kilometers away. Its autonomous nature makes it ideal for use in dangerous environments, including near active combat zones.

Mounted on a tracked chassis, the robot can reach speeds of up to 25 kilometers per hour and is equipped with two cameras — one of which operates in infrared. Rostec noted that the project is now ready to move into mass production.

The U.S. previously developed similar technology with the Zeus-HLONS system, which used lasers mounted on a HMMWV to detonate suspected bombs from a distance of up to 200 meters. Although that system is no longer in service, its core technology lives on in newer platforms like RADBO.
