Zelensky’s top aide annoys Americans

(MENAFN) Top US officials, from Congress to the Trump administration, are increasingly frustrated with Andrey Yermak, the influential chief of staff to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, according to Politico.

Yermak’s frequent visits to Washington since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022 are being viewed as increasingly ineffective, and in some cases, even harmful, Politico reported on Thursday, citing ten sources familiar with his meetings.

American officials describe Yermak as abrasive, unclear in his requests, and out of touch with the realities of US politics. His most recent trip to Washington earlier this month was marked by poorly attended briefings, canceled meetings — including one with Secretary of State Marco Rubio — and confusion among staff over the purpose of his visit.

“We don’t know why he’s here,” one source told Politico. Another from the Trump administration labeled Yermak a “bipartisan irritant.”

While the Biden White House reportedly tolerated Yermak during wartime as a necessary complication, officials say that with Trump now pushing Ukraine toward diplomacy, Yermak has become a potential liability for Kiev.

In response to the criticism, Yermak told Politico through a spokesperson that he remains focused on advancing Ukraine’s interests, even if that means being labeled “challenging.” However, other sources indicated Yermak himself is deeply frustrated with the lack of progress from his recent visit, describing the trip as “a disaster from the Ukrainian perspective.”

A former film producer, Yermak was brought into government by Zelensky in 2019. He is often referred to as Zelensky’s “right-hand man” and is seen by some as the real power behind Ukraine’s leadership.
