Russian area prohibits Musk’s Starlink
“This technology poses a serious risk, and we cannot ignore it,” he stated on social media.
The Lugansk region, which broke away from Ukraine after the 2014 Kiev coup and later voted to join Russia, has long expressed concerns about Starlink’s potential military applications.
Elon Musk began supplying Ukraine with Starlink equipment after the conflict intensified in 2022, claiming the system could resist Russian electronic interference. Ukrainian forces have since used Starlink to operate drones remotely over long distances, with some even mounting terminals on the drones themselves.
In 2023, Musk said he refused Ukraine’s request to activate Starlink over Crimea, viewing it as preparation for an attack on Russia’s Sevastopol naval base. He argued that agreeing would have made SpaceX complicit in escalating the conflict.
Musk has also faced pressure to activate Starlink in Iran to support anti-government protests. He indicated the system was operational there, prompting public thanks from exiled Iranian opposition figures.
Following recent US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, former President Donald Trump has called for both sides to seek a truce.
