EU Population Reaches 450.4 Million
This marks an increase of 1.07 million people compared to the previous year.
The EU’s population has grown for four straight years following a decline in 2021, which was attributed to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the start of 2024, the population across EU countries stood at 449.3 million.
Preliminary data and estimates indicate that Germany will remain the most populous EU member state in 2025, with a population of approximately 83.6 million.
France follows with 68.6 million inhabitants, Italy with 58.9 million, Spain 49.1 million, Poland 36.5 million, Romania 19 million, the Netherlands 18 million, and Belgium 11.9 million.
Conversely, the countries with the smallest populations within the EU are Malta, with 574,000 residents, and Luxembourg, with 681,000.
Eurostat highlighted in its statement that "the observed population growth can be largely attributed to the increased migratory movements post-COVID-19."
The bloc’s statistical agency also noted that since 2012, the negative natural change in population—where deaths outnumber births—has been outweighed by positive net migration, supporting overall population growth in the EU.
