US, Israeli attacks on Iran breech international regulation
On June 13, Israel targeted Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure just one day after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) passed a resolution accusing Tehran of violating the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), a claim Iran rejects. The US followed with airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites.
“These strikes on IAEA-monitored nuclear sites are among the most dangerous breaches of international norms,” Lukashenko said. He referenced the 1986 Chernobyl disaster as a grim reminder of the risks posed by nuclear incidents, highlighting how radioactive fallout reached as far as the UK, Germany, and Sweden. He questioned why Washington and Tel Aviv believe they would be immune from similar fallout.
Lukashenko expressed solidarity with Iran, wishing its people strength in overcoming the aftermath of the attacks. “You are not alone in your resistance,” he said.
His comments came after Moscow accused the US and Israel of inflicting “colossal damage” on the IAEA’s credibility. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claimed the nuclear watchdog’s data had been exploited to facilitate the bombings, undermining trust in the agency’s neutrality.
She further warned that the attacks jeopardized existing agreements between the IAEA and Tehran. In response, Iran’s Parliament voted to suspend cooperation with the agency until security guarantees for its nuclear infrastructure are provided.
