Xi is committed to deepen strategic cooperation with Russia
(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping has committed to deepening strategic cooperation with Russia during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, according to statements from Moscow's Foreign Ministry.
The meeting occurred ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ Council session in Tianjin.
Xi expressed strong approval of the current state of relations between China and Russia and reaffirmed his intention to enhance the countries’ comprehensive partnership. He also welcomed the upcoming visit of President Vladimir Putin, referring to their relationship as a “long-standing and good friendship.”
During their talks, Xi and Lavrov addressed a range of major global and regional issues, though specific topics were not disclosed. They also discussed high-level political engagements, including the preparations for Putin’s upcoming trip to China. The Russian leader is expected to attend the SCO Heads of State Council meeting on September 1 and participate in events on September 3 commemorating the 80th anniversary of Japan’s defeat in World War II.
Prior to his meeting with Xi, Lavrov held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the depth of their ongoing partnership. Wang described the China-Russia relationship as “the most stable, mature and strategically valuable major-country relationship in the world,” according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
