Pistorius Says Troops Are Ready to Respond to Russia

(MENAFN) German troops are ready to engage Russian forces if Moscow launches an assault on a NATO ally, according to recent comments made by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.

In a conversation with a news outlet released on Sunday, Pistorius emphasized that German military personnel — some of whom were recently repositioned to Lithuania — are fully prepared to use deadly force if the situation demands it.

Pistorius affirmed this stance by stating, “If deterrence doesn’t work and Russia attacks, is it going to happen? Yes.”

He urged observers to visit Vilnius and speak directly with members of the German brigade stationed there, adding, “They know exactly what their job is.”

The minister also underscored that discussions surrounding peace or de-escalation can only occur “on equal terms” and “from a position of strength.”

He clarified that this approach is “not to intimidate anyone, but to make it clear that we know what we can do — we want to live in peace with you, but don’t think that we’re weak or that we won’t defend ourselves.”

In response to such rhetoric, Moscow has consistently rejected claims suggesting that Russia intends to strike NATO, labeling the notion as “nonsense.”

Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov criticized what he called scare tactics by Western officials.

He remarked, “They have made a monster out of Russia in order to justify the decision to increase NATO defense spending to 5% of GDP.”
