Brazil's Top Judge Defends Judiciary After Trump’s Harsh Rebuke
(MENAFN) Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court President, Luis Roberto Barroso, has firmly defended the nation’s judicial independence following sharp criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a letter sent to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva last week, Trump announced his intention to implement a 50 percent tariff on Brazilian imports. He justified the proposed penalty by pointing to what he described as the "unfair treatment" of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently on trial for allegedly attempting to orchestrate a coup.
Trump further expressed concern over decisions made by Brazil’s top court involving Bolsonaro’s associates in the U.S., asserting that those rulings negatively impacted American tech firms.
Responding in a statement issued Sunday night, Barroso dismissed Trump's accusations, arguing that the U.S. president's assertions stemmed from an “imprecise understanding of the facts.” He added: “In today’s Brazil, no one is persecuted.”
Barroso emphasized that the judicial proceedings against Bolsonaro are being conducted transparently and in full compliance with legal protocols.
Bolsonaro, who governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022, stands accused of attempting to cling to power through violent means after his electoral loss to Lula.
