Indian FM states India’s relationship with China is getting better

(MENAFN) India’s relationship with China has been steadily improving over the past nine months, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Monday. The remarks were made while Jaishankar was visiting China to attend a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Jaishankar attributed the improvement in ties to the de-escalation of tensions along the disputed border and the ability of both sides to maintain peace.
“Since our leaders’ meeting in Kazan in October 2024, the India-China relationship has been gradually moving in a positive direction,” the Indian Foreign Minister said. “Our responsibility is to maintain that momentum.”

Relations between the two countries had been under significant strain following a deadly clash in the Himalayas in 2020, which resulted in casualties on both sides. However, talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the BRICS summit in Kazan in 2024 helped initiate a thaw in bilateral ties.

On Monday in Beijing, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of continuing to improve relations.
“We have also earlier agreed that differences should not become disputes, nor should competition ever become conflict,” he said. “On this foundation, we can now continue to develop our ties along a positive trajectory.”

Jaishankar also expressed appreciation to China for resuming access for Indian pilgrims to visit sacred sites in Tibet, marking the first such visits in five years. He highlighted the importance of “measures towards normalizing our people-to-people exchanges” as a way to “foster mutually-beneficial cooperation.”

In addition, he urged both sides to avoid “restrictive trade measures and roadblocks,” in a likely reference to China’s recent moves to curb the export of fertilizers and rare earth magnets to India.
