Poll: Japan’s Ruling Bloc Faces Major Setback in July Vote

(MENAFN) A recent poll by Tokyo-based media reveals that Japan’s ruling coalition is on track to lose its majority in the upcoming July 20 Upper House elections.

The survey, which gathered responses from over 43,000 voters, indicates that the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) could secure fewer than 40 of the 125 contested seats—a potentially devastating blow that might lead to calls for Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s resignation.

Amid the country’s escalating cost-of-living crisis, several smaller parties have gained traction, capitalizing on public dissatisfaction. These minor parties appear poised to achieve significant advances in the House of Councilors.

While the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ) holds steady in support, smaller parties are leveraging populist economic platforms to attract voters. The Democratic Party for the People (DPP) and Sanseito party, in particular, seem positioned to expand their representation and influence.

To maintain control in the 248-seat chamber, the LDP along with its coalition partner Komeito must collectively win at least 50 seats. However, the poll suggests the ruling bloc's hold is precarious.

Despite the ruling alliance’s weakened stance, the CDPJ is projected to make only modest gains, likely falling short of increasing its current 22 seats to 30.

Both the DPP and Sanseito, rallying support with their “Japanese First” nationalist and anti-establishment message, stand to capture more seats than they currently occupy.

Additionally, other smaller parties are expected to make breakthroughs, with the Conservative Party of Japan predicted to secure its first two Upper House seats.
