FSB reports Russian female detained for leaking army secrets to Ukraine

(MENAFN) A woman in Novorossiysk, a key Black Sea port city in southern Russia, has been arrested on suspicion of treason for allegedly leaking military secrets to Ukraine, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) reported on Thursday. According to the FSB, the woman collected and sent sensitive information about Russian military sites to Ukrainian intelligence.

She reportedly worked aboard a civilian vessel operating in the ports of Novorossiysk and Sochi, during which time she allegedly contacted a pro-Ukrainian group that the FSB claims is under the control of Ukrainian intelligence services. The woman is accused of gathering details on the locations of Russian Navy ships and air defense systems and passing this data to her Ukrainian contacts.

The FSB stated that no harm was caused to Russian military equipment or personnel thanks to swift preventive actions. A criminal case has been opened for high treason, which carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison. The suspect is currently in pre-trial detention.

Authorities also released a video showing the woman’s arrest and purported confession. In the footage, she reportedly admitted to sharing information on military installations with a foreign intelligence service and said she did not see any serious wrongdoing in her actions. She claimed she was recruited through a contact named ‘Maxim’ via Telegram and was promised financial compensation in exchange for her cooperation.

Separately, the FSB warned that Ukrainian intelligence is increasingly using Telegram and WhatsApp to recruit Russian citizens for spying and sabotage missions.

Earlier on the same day, the FSB announced the arrest of another woman in St. Petersburg on similar charges. She allegedly gathered information on Russian military personnel, including addresses and vehicles, to aid in potential terrorist attacks. She also faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty.
