Russian priests state writing ‘God’ in lowercase is sinful
Archpriest Aleksandr Ilyashenko told Abzats Media that using lowercase reflects lingering Soviet-era atheist attitudes. “In my view, it’s a sin and shows a lack of respect and gratitude toward the Lord,” he said. “It’s disappointing that some scholars think otherwise. I believe it’s unacceptable.”
Father Alvian Tkhelidze, a priest and well-known religious blogger, emphasized that for Christians, even everyday phrases like “thank God” are acts of honoring the Creator and should be capitalized accordingly.
On Saturday, Archpriest Vladimir Vigilyansky, rector of the Church of St. Tatiana at Moscow State University, also criticized the guideline. He insisted that ‘God’ must always be capitalized in reference to the Christian deity, noting that lowercase should only apply to pagan gods.
Some Russian authors, including Fyodor Dostoevsky, historically used lowercase in their works. However, Anastasia Solomonova, dean of the Philology Faculty at the Pushkin State Russian Language Institute, pointed out that this practice became widespread after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, when the Soviet regime’s atheist policies rejected the Christian God’s authority.
In 2022, Russia’s Education Ministry recommended that words like ‘God,’ ‘Lord,’ ‘Holy Trinity,’ ‘Holy Ghost,’ ‘Creator,’ ‘Church,’ and ‘Providence’ always be capitalized when used in religious contexts.
