Italian figures gather to defend UN Special Rapporteur
In an open letter addressed to President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, nearly 80 signatories urged the Italian leadership to publicly support Albanese, an Italian citizen.
The letter, initiated by the cultural dissemination project Tlon, demands the immediate removal of the sanctions imposed by the United States. It also calls on Italian authorities to provide protection for Albanese, who is being penalized “for fulfilling her UN mandate.”
The group proposed a joint parliamentary effort to grant Albanese diplomatic protection.
“Remaining silent on Gaza is complicity,” the letter stated, emphasizing the necessity to carefully monitor conditions in Gaza, support humanitarian, cultural, and legal efforts to uphold Palestinian rights, and promote a fair peace grounded in international law.
Among those endorsing the appeal were prominent figures from Italian cinema such as Pierfrancesco Favino, Paola Cortellesi, Stefano Accorsi, Valeria Golino, Luca Zingaretti, Valerio Mastandrea, and Claudio Santamaria. Renowned intellectuals including Serena Dandini, Lella Costa, Alessandro Bergonzoni, art historian Tomaso Montanari, and writer Lidia Ravera also joined the initiative.
Reflecting rising public backing, a mural bearing the slogan “Hands off Francesca Albanese” was recently painted on a street wall in Rome.
