Indian DM demands grows for BrahMos missiles
“During Operation Sindoor, the BrahMos missile achieved remarkable success. Now, approximately 14-15 nations want to acquire this missile,” Singh stated.
The BrahMos missiles are produced by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India and Russia, named after the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers. India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) holds a 50.5% stake in the venture, while Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia owns the remaining 49.5%. During the four-day conflict in May, BrahMos missiles, alongside Russian-made S-400 air defense systems, played a crucial role in safeguarding Indian air bases and other strategic facilities from Pakistani attacks.
India’s military remains heavily reliant on Russian-origin hardware, with roughly 60% of its arsenal comprising Russian equipment. Last month, Singh met with Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov on the sidelines of a Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China. Their discussions focused on the continued supply of S-400 systems, upgrades for Su-30 MKI fighter jets, and other key defense procurements.
As India advances its push for greater domestic defense manufacturing, it has welcomed continued Russian collaboration in its defense sector. Earlier this month, Russia delivered a new Krivak-class stealth frigate to the Indian Navy — the eighth vessel of its kind supplied to India over the past two decades. This latest ship, constructed at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad, contains 26% Indian-made components and was closely monitored by Indian defense officials throughout its production.
