Japan Unveils Fresh Cabinet Office to Address Foreign Population Concerns
This newly established office will facilitate the exchange of information on matters related to foreign nationals living in Japan and will coordinate efforts among key agencies such as the Immigration Services Agency, the Finance Ministry, and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, as reported by media.
During the launch event held at the prime minister’s office, Ishiba emphasized the importance of acknowledging public concerns about foreign residents, including accusations of disproportionately high crime rates and misuse of the social security system.
Ishiba stated that while Japan views the influx of foreign nationals as a crucial factor for economic growth, “it's important for us to take stricter responses to those who do not follow our rules and rework the existing system if it does not match the reality.”
The office will be staffed by approximately 80 officials and is being established amid heightened political focus on immigration issues ahead of Sunday’s House of Councillors election, the upper chamber of Japan’s parliament, the report added.
The ultraconservative minor party Sanseito, which has been gaining traction, has spearheaded demands for stronger restrictions on foreigners, campaigning on a “Japanese First” platform that advocates reducing the number of foreign workers allowed into Japan.
