WHO Urges Global Unity to Eradicate AIDS
(MENAFN) On Monday, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) urged international leaders to elevate HIV prevention efforts and engage in impactful collaborations to advance the objective of ending the AIDS epidemic.
Speaking at the International AIDS Society conference on HIV Science held in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the importance of solidarity among governments, researchers, civil society groups, and those directly impacted by HIV.
Their joint efforts, he stressed, are essential to safeguarding and furthering the progress made in medical treatment, disease prevention, and support services.
“For over two decades, sustained investments have led to groundbreaking advances in treatment, prevention and care for millions of people. We cannot let that progress slip away,” he said.
Tedros also criticized the recent abrupt cessation of financial support for HIV-related programs, noting that it is severely hindering access to critical, life-preserving resources across numerous nations.
The Kigali conference convened more than 3,000 global figures, scientific experts, and civil society representatives to collaborate on strategies for the future of HIV response.
During the event, the WHO unveiled updated recommendations, endorsing the use of injectable lenacapavir (LEN) as an additional form of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention.
The organization also advocated for the inclusion of injectable antiretrovirals in treatment protocols.
