Jaishankar Urges SCO to Stay Firm on Terrorism
(MENAFN) During a recent assembly in Tianjin, China, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar appealed to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to uphold an “uncompromising position” on terrorism, urging the group to stay committed to its original aims.
Speaking at the Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting on Tuesday, Jaishankar emphasized the necessity for the bloc to reinforce global stability and tackle persistent issues that jeopardize the shared interests of member nations.
Referring to the SCO’s initial goals, Jaishankar reminded the gathering that the organization was established to fight against “terrorism, separatism and extremism.”
He noted that these threats are often interconnected, intensifying their overall danger to regional peace and cooperation.
Illustrating his point, Jaishankar cited a recent terrorist incident in India’s Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The assault, which occurred in April, resulted in the deaths of 26 people—most of them visitors.
“It was deliberately conducted to undermine the tourism economy of Jammu and Kashmir, while sowing a religious divide,” he stated, underscoring the broader intent behind such acts of violence.
Reinforcing his message, Jaishankar stressed the importance of the SCO adhering to its founding mission by taking a resolute stance against terrorism.
“It is imperative that the SCO, to remain true to its founding objectives, take an uncompromising position on this challenge,” he asserted.
The meeting also saw the participation of Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, signaling continued regional dialogue within the framework of the SCO.
