Yemeni Government Forces Intercept Iranian Weapons Shipment
The seizure is being regarded as a major development in the ongoing conflict.
Tariq Mohammed Saleh, a key figure on Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, revealed that the consignment consisted of sophisticated weaponry.
Among the items were naval and aerial missile systems, air defense units, state-of-the-art radar technology, drones, reconnaissance tools, anti-armor missiles, B10 artillery, sniper optics, long-range rifles, ammunition, and other high-grade military gear.
“This is a direct blow to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)'s project supporting the Houthis,” Saleh posted on his X account, emphasizing the strategic significance of the operation.
Military insiders in Yemen referred to the seizure as “the largest in Yemen and the wider region,” underlining its potential impact on the regional arms flow. There has yet to be any response from either Iran or the Houthis regarding these claims.
Local sources, including local media, reported that since the beginning of 2024, Yemeni forces have intercepted a total of eight weapons shipments heading toward the Houthis through the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
Although Yemen has experienced a relatively stable period since April 2022—when a ceasefire brought an end to the hostilities that began in September 2014 following the Iran-backed Houthis’ capture of Sanaa—tensions persist, and this latest arms interception could further influence the fragile equilibrium.
