Shoigu Says NATO's Influence Poses Threat to Russia
His comments, made public on Tuesday, cautioned that the alliance's increasing militarization, along with the European Union’s rising defense spending, could destabilize the global situation.
In an interview with a Russian daily, Shoigu referred to NATO's latest summit as “Trump’s summit.”
He further accused European nations of succumbing to U.S. pressure by agreeing to boost their defense budgets to 5% of their gross domestic product by 2035.
He argued that several EU countries were masking civilian infrastructure projects as military expenditures, misleading the public about the true nature of their defense strategies.
Shoigu contended, “Europeans have turned deception into a strategy.” He explained that European leaders were pretending to comply with U.S. President Donald Trump’s demands while redirecting defense budgets toward projects like roads, bridges, and ports. He pointed to Italy’s proposed bridge in Sicily as an example of this practice.
The Russian official also emphasized NATO’s extensive military assets, which include over 50,000 armored vehicles, 7,000 aircraft, and 750 ships.
He noted that satellite systems were being used against Russia, particularly in Ukraine.
Shoigu further criticized the EU for its plans to finance its military expansion by reducing social services and utilizing frozen Russian assets.
Additionally, he pointed out that much of the financial burden of supporting Ukraine had been shifted onto Europe by the United States, with the EU planning to allocate €800 billion (USD 870 billion) towards military spending by 2030 as part of its “Readiness 2030” initiative.
