Attacks against US immigration representatives increase by 830 percent
Between January 21 and July 14, agents with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported a dramatic increase in attacks compared to the same timeframe last year, DHS announced on Tuesday.
“ICE officers are successfully removing terrorists, murderers, pedophiles, and other dangerous individuals from American communities, even as reckless rhetoric from certain politicians is fueling a spike in violence against them,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
The agency pointed to multiple incidents, including a violent clash during Representative LaMonica McIver’s (D-NJ) visit to the Delaney Hall detention center in May. McIver, who has pleaded not guilty, faces federal assault charges.
Another incident cited involved Representative Salud Carbajal (D-CA), who allegedly exposed the business card of an ICE agent to a hostile crowd. The agent was subsequently attacked, struck with a rock, and hospitalized with injuries requiring stitches, DHS said.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called on politicians of all affiliations to denounce the violence, specifically criticizing California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Anti-ICE protests in California escalated into riots in June, prompting Trump to deploy the National Guard. Newsom accused Washington of orchestrating a “federal takeover,” sparking further protests in cities like New York, Chicago, and Dallas.
