US Representative Criticizes USAID’s Dismantling
(MENAFN) US Representative Gregory Meeks raised significant alarm on Wednesday regarding the "illegal" disbanding of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the shift of its duties to the State Department.
In a formal letter addressed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Meeks called for clarity concerning the Trump administration's actions in dismantling the agency.
Meeks emphasized in his letter that the "wholly insufficient retention of USAID personnel both in Washington, D.C., and at posts globally" due to the administration’s poorly executed staffing plans poses considerable risks to both the State Department and the United States.
He warned that the lack of adequate personnel to oversee and enforce essential controls could result in mismanagement, wasted resources, and increased liability for foreign assistance programs.
The congressman further raised concerns that the reduction of USAID’s staff and the subsequent decisions regarding personnel could impair the agency’s ability to address national security needs and squander taxpayer money.
He expressed frustration that these cuts fail to retain the necessary talent and technical expertise essential for fulfilling vital missions.
Meeks requested that Rubio provide answers to his inquiries by July 25. Earlier in the month, Rubio had announced that USAID would officially stop managing foreign assistance programs as of July 1, transferring those responsibilities to the State Department.
