Tsunami gets triggered by 7.2 earthquake in Alaska

(MENAFN) A significant earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 shook the southern coast of Alaska on Wednesday afternoon, leading to tsunami warnings for parts of Southcentral and Southwest Alaska. According to reports, the seismic event occurred at 12:37 p.m. local time, with its epicenter approximately 83 miles (134 km) southeast of King Cove. Initially recorded as a 7.3 magnitude, the quake was widely felt by communities along the Aleutian Islands, Alaska Peninsula, and Cook Inlet.

Following the quake, tsunami alerts were issued by national agencies for areas stretching along the Alaska Peninsula—from Kennedy Entrance to Unimak Pass—and extending toward Anchorage. Local authorities in Homer urged residents to move to higher ground as a precautionary measure. However, emergency officials in Anchorage, a city housing nearly 40% of Alaska’s population, indicated there was no immediate danger to their area.

Residents in affected communities such as Old Harbor heard sirens and received warnings broadcast over local radio stations, as captured in videos shared by locals.
