Almost half of US sue Trump’s government for withdrawing disaster relief funding

(MENAFN) Twenty U.S. states, primarily governed by Democrats, have filed a lawsuit against the administration of President Donald Trump over its decision to withdraw critical disaster relief funding.

The lawsuit, submitted to a federal court in Boston on Wednesday, seeks to prevent the administration from stopping billions of dollars in grants designated for enhancing infrastructure designed to protect against natural disasters.

According to reports, the states argue that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) acted beyond its authority when it terminated the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program in April—despite the program having been approved by Congress.

FEMA has also faced scrutiny for its handling of recent catastrophic floods in Texas, which have claimed the lives of more than 130 people.
