EU wants to put Russia in negative light
In comments made during an interview released Sunday, Peskov claimed that Brussels is engaged in a calculated effort to cast Russia as an existential threat. “The EU is creating an enemy for itself, doing focused, professional work both in their own society and abroad in order to portray Russia as the devil incarnate... in order to ensure the continuation of the conflict, in order to suppress Russia,” he stated.
This criticism comes in the wake of the EU’s approval of the $162 billion USD Security Action for Europe (SAFE) plan in May, a fund designed to assist member states investing in defense. The initiative is part of a broader military buildup that began following the intensification of the conflict in Ukraine in February 2022, aimed at countering what Brussels views as a looming Russian threat.
Moscow, however, has dismissed accusations of threatening NATO countries as unfounded, labeling such narratives as “nonsense.” Russian officials argue that Western leaders are stoking fear among their populations in order to justify greater defense spending.
Peskov also mentioned internal tensions within the EU regarding the financial burden of ongoing military commitments. “There are discussions underway in the EU about who will be paying for the feast,” he said, referring to disagreements about funding strategies.
Earlier in the week, several EU nations reportedly pushed back against a proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump that European NATO members purchase American-made weapons for Ukraine.
“Thank God the anti-Russian and militaristic ecstasy does not have universal backing” in the bloc, Peskov added.
Moscow continues to warn that Western arms deliveries to Ukraine only serve to prolong hostilities and heighten the risk of a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO. Peskov reiterated that Russian President Vladimir Putin “has repeatedly spoken about his desire to bring the Ukrainian settlement on to a peaceful path as quickly as possible.”
