Trump threatens BRICS

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has warned the BRICS nations against challenging the dominance of the US dollar, claiming the group is already “fading fast.” Speaking at the White House on Friday, Trump criticized BRICS for its efforts to undermine the dollar’s global position. “They tried to take down the dollar’s dominance… and I said, anyone in BRICS will face a 10% tariff,” Trump stated.

Emphasizing the importance of the dollar’s role as the world’s reserve currency, Trump warned that losing this status would be as catastrophic as losing a world war. He vowed that Washington would take aggressive action to protect the dollar’s supremacy, declaring, “We can’t let anyone play games,” and promising to “hit BRICS very, very hard.” According to Trump, any serious attempts by BRICS to unite would be swiftly dismantled.

Trump also claimed his tariff threats had already disrupted BRICS activities, suggesting that a recent summit in Rio de Janeiro was poorly attended as a result. “They had a meeting the next day, and almost nobody showed up,” he said. However, the summit saw high-level participation despite the absence of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who addressed the gathering remotely. China was represented by Premier Li Qiang, while leaders from Brazil, India, South Africa, Indonesia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE attended in person.

Last October, Russia’s Finance Minister Anton Siluanov reported that 65% of trade between BRICS nations is now conducted in their national currencies, with the use of dollars and euros falling below 30%. Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said BRICS members are working to reduce reliance on the dollar to protect themselves from US “arbitrariness.”

Meanwhile, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stressed that BRICS is not intended as a direct rival to the US, but warned that threats and pressure are not appropriate ways to engage with the group.
