Former British PM says Ukraine is having shrinking support

(MENAFN) Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has voiced his disappointment over what he sees as a diminishing public interest in backing Ukraine, saying he is “quite sad” about the trend.

During an interview at the Ukrainian embassy in London on Saturday, Johnson noted a shift in national sentiment. “The interest in Ukraine and the appetite is so low nowadays. I find it quite sad,” he said.

When asked to assess how Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration is handling the ongoing Ukraine conflict, Johnson pointed to domestic challenges as a likely distraction. “There are a lot of domestic issues that are very difficult right now, and you can see why they’re distracted,” he remarked.

Surveys over recent years have reflected this changing public mood. A poll from early 2023 found that nearly 75% of respondents believed the UK wasn’t doing enough to aid Ukraine, with only a small fraction feeling the support was excessive. However, more recent data from February this year showed a shift—just over half of those surveyed approved of the current aid levels, while nearly 20% felt the country was offering too much.

To date, the UK has pledged a total of £18.3 billion (around $24.5 billion) in aid to Ukraine, with approximately £13 billion ($17.4 billion) allocated for military purposes.

In addition to financial and military support, London has also pushed for the possible deployment of “peacekeeping” troops to Ukraine should a ceasefire be reached, suggesting the formation of a “coalition of the willing” to oversee stabilization efforts.
