Kremlin Accuses EU of Demonizing Russia
In May, the EU introduced the €150 billion Security Action for Europe (SAFE) initiative aimed at aiding member states willing to increase defense investments.
This step was part of a broader military buildup effort initiated by the bloc following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, intended to counter what it views as the “Russian threat.”
Moscow has rejected allegations of intending to attack NATO countries as “nonsense,” asserting that Western politicians are trying to frighten their citizens to legitimize higher military expenditures.
During an interview with journalist Pavel Zarubin published on Sunday, Peskov explained that the EU “is creating an enemy for itself, doing focused, professional work both in their own society and abroad in order to portray Russia as the devil incarnate... in order to ensure the continuation of the conflict, in order to suppress Russia.”
The Kremlin spokesperson also noted ongoing debates within the EU “about who will be paying for the feast.”
Earlier this week, several EU nations opposed a proposal from US President Donald Trump that suggested European NATO members purchase American arms for Ukraine.
“Thank God the anti-Russian and militaristic ecstasy does not have universal backing” within the bloc, Peskov concluded.
