Netanyahu’s corruption trial postponed due to ‘food poisoning’
The trial, which began in 2020, centers on charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust related to allegations of accepting gifts and influence peddling. Netanyahu has repeatedly denied the accusations, claiming they are part of a politically motivated effort to undermine him.
Officials reported that the 75-year-old leader became ill overnight and was examined at home by his physician. He was diagnosed with intestinal inflammation caused by consuming “spoiled food” and is receiving IV treatment for dehydration. His condition is said to be stable.
“In accordance with medical advice, the prime minister will rest at home for the next three days and manage government affairs remotely,” his office stated. Netanyahu also missed the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday due to his illness.
Netanyahu’s lawyer, Amit Hadad, asked for a delay, which was granted by the State Attorney’s Office. Although they proposed resuming testimony later in the week, the court canceled all hearings. Due to the court’s summer recess, proceedings are unlikely to resume before September 5.
The trial has already been delayed multiple times due to Netanyahu’s health issues, Israel’s conflicts with Hamas and Iran, and his diplomatic commitments. In December 2024, he missed a session after suffering from a urinary tract infection linked to an enlarged prostate, which required surgery.
Last month, former US President Donald Trump urged Israel to cancel the trial, calling it a “witch hunt.” In June, the US joined Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, accusing Tehran of nearing completion of a nuclear weapon—a claim Iran denied before retaliating against Israel and a US base in Qatar.
