Russia attacks Ukraine with heavy missile, drone fire
The first wave of attacks reportedly began shortly after midnight, prompting the city’s mayor, Vitaly Klitschko, to urge residents to take cover as air defense systems attempted to intercept the incoming threats. Additional explosions were reported in the early hours between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m.
Timur Tkachenko, head of the capital’s military administration, confirmed that “a fire broke out on the roof of a non-residential building.”
By 5 a.m., Ukrainian authorities stated that at least one person had died and another had been hospitalized. Fires broke out in several areas as a result of falling debris from intercepted missiles and drones, according to officials.
A number of blurry videos circulated on Ukrainian social media allegedly depict the aftermath of the strikes, but verifying the footage remains difficult due to strict information controls imposed by Ukrainian authorities.
Ukrainian media and officials did not provide clear details about the intended targets, only referring vaguely to a supermarket, a warehouse, and a vacant residential complex.
Officials also reported “damage near the entrance to the Lukyanovskaya metro station,” an area directly across from the Artem facility, which is involved in missile development and production.
