Media reports Iran consents continuing nuclear discussions with European nations

(MENAFN) Iran, along with France, Germany, and the UK, has agreed to restart discussions on Tehran’s nuclear program next week, according to a report by Tasnim News Agency on Sunday, citing an unnamed source. While the specific time and location are still being finalized, the talks are expected to involve deputy foreign ministers from Iran and the three European nations.

Last week, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot warned that the E3 — as the three European countries are collectively known — would reinstate UN sanctions on Iran if no agreement is reached by the end of August. These sanctions would include restrictions on weapons, banking, and nuclear equipment, which had been lifted a decade ago.

The E3 holds the right to trigger the ‘snapback’ mechanism to reimpose sanctions under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which initially saw Iran curb its nuclear program in return for sanctions relief. The original signatories of the deal included the E3, Russia, China, the US, and the EU. However, former US President Donald Trump withdrew from the pact during his first term.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on the E3 and the EU to stop making threats and act responsibly, arguing they have “no moral or legal grounds” to invoke the snapback sanctions. “It was the US that abandoned the agreement after years of negotiations, not Iran,” he emphasized in a Telegram post.

Talks between the US and Iran, facilitated by Oman, fell apart last month following Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities on June 13, which Israel claimed were aimed at preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon — a charge Tehran denies. The US escalated the situation on June 22 by bombing three major Iranian nuclear sites.
