Prospects of Putin, Trump Meeting Remain Open
He emphasized that such a meeting "will definitely happen," but noted that "the time has not yet come."
Earlier this week, a news outlet revealed the possibility of a three-way summit involving Putin, Trump, and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
This gathering could potentially take place in September during a military parade in Beijing commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory over imperial Japan in World War II.
While Putin has already confirmed his participation in the event, the Kremlin clarified that it has not received any official information about a proposed meeting between the leaders.
In a video excerpt from an interview with journalist Pavel Zarubin released on Sunday, Peskov discussed the likelihood of future talks between Putin and Trump.
He commented that "it is possible, and in time it will definitely happen. It is essential." He further elaborated that such a meeting might become necessary “for signing some major agreements that will be reached over time after a huge amount of work has been done.”
However, he added that "this time has not yet come" and that significant efforts are still required before such an encounter can take place.
The two former heads of state have held several phone conversations in recent months, mainly addressing strategies to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Trump recently expressed dissatisfaction, stating that he feels “unhappy” and “disappointed” in Putin.
Responding to Trump's remarks, Peskov remarked that "everybody has already gotten used to his rather tough and straightforward rhetoric."
Nevertheless, he acknowledged that Trump consistently "confirms his intentions to continue to do everything possible to facilitate a peaceful settlement" between Russia and Ukraine.
