HRW Urges Sanctions on Israel
This appeal comes in the lead-up to a high-level UN gathering on the situation in Palestine, scheduled for July 28–29.
This upcoming ministerial conference, which is being jointly organized by France and Saudi Arabia, follows the 2024 ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) declaring Israel’s occupation to be illegal and classifying it as a form of apartheid.
"It’s essential for governments to address Israel’s grave abuses by committing to concrete, timebound measures, including targeted sanctions, arms embargoes, suspending preferential trade agreements, and a clear commitment to support the enforcement of all International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrants," said Bruno Stagno, the chief advocacy officer at HRW.
The organization further cautioned that "the threshold of a serious risk of genocide was crossed long ago," referring to decisions by the ICJ and the destruction of civilian infrastructure caused by Israeli military forces.
HRW highlighted that under the Genocide Convention, countries are legally compelled to take action.
The group pointed out that 12 nations have recently pledged to sever ties with Israel due to its military actions in Gaza.
Additionally, countries like the United Kingdom and several members of the European Union have either imposed sanctions or begun reassessing their economic partnerships with Israel.
"Much more is needed, though, to stop the Israeli authorities’ extermination, persecution, and apartheid against Palestinians," Human Rights Watch stated.
As part of its recommendations, the organization laid out urgent actions that UN members should implement.
These include halting all military support and weapons sales to Israel, enforcing travel restrictions and freezing assets of individuals associated with serious abuses, and prohibiting any commercial dealings with settlements deemed illegal under international law.
