Media reports Indian Air Force to make drills close to Pakistan border
The operation will involve key fighter squadrons, including frontline aircraft such as the Sukhoi Su-30MKI, Rafale, and Mirage 2000 jets. Air defense systems and critical support infrastructure will also be part of the drills, India Today reported. Officials emphasized that the exercise is part of the IAF’s routine operational readiness training and will be conducted in the Rajasthan region near the International Border.
“This is a standard preparedness drill involving possibly two or three Air Force commands. NOTAMs [Notices to Airmen] will be issued to restrict civilian aircraft movement in the designated airspace,” an official stated.
The exercise will reportedly focus on improving night operation capabilities. It follows a military standoff between India and Pakistan in May, during which India tested its aerial combat strength using both imported and domestically produced systems.
The IAF continues to rely heavily on Russian-origin aircraft such as the Su-30MKI and MiG-29. Since 2004, India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited has locally produced more than 220 Su-30MKIs under a Russian license, making it the mainstay of India’s fighter fleet.
Earlier this year, Russia unveiled its Su-57 Felon stealth jet at the Aero India defense exhibition, where the U.S. also displayed its F-35 fighter. Russian officials have indicated that India could upgrade its facilities to begin assembling fifth-generation fighter jets under their ongoing defense partnership.
